Literacy Letter:

In your letter this week, describe the most exciting part of your book so far. Be sure to tell what makes it so exciting. Is it because of what the characters do? Is it because of what the characters say? Is it because of what the characters think? Is the excitement due to the conflict in the book? (  . . Or maybe it’s because of all of these things!) Write about specific examples.        If your book is not exciting yet, write about what would make it exciting. Does it need more action? Do you want to hear more dialogue? Do you wish the author would introduce more interesting characters?        As always, remember to state the title of your book, the author, and what you would rate the book! Give lots of details and be sure to write no less than 1 page!

The English 10 page has been updated with the 1984 Novel Unit Material.

It even has your writing prompt for your Parallel Reading a day early!

Look around our community (Thurston County or Pierce County). Have you seen signs in Spanish, store fronts, notices at doctors offices, etc? Here's your opportunity to not only earn some extra credit, but also participate in our community! (Be aware!)

The extra credit guidelines are as follow:

  • Take a picture of any community sign or store notice, etc. that is written IN SPANISH ONLY.
  • Email the picture to Sra. Chan.
  • In your email include the following information about each image:
    • a translation of the sign (in English)
    • the address/place where you found/saw it
    • your name/class period
  • Each image shared may NOT be any repetition of a previous image shared. For example, if someone sends me an image of the sign at "Tienda X" and I post it here, no one else may submit that image - nor any images from that same sign/place) for credit.
  • Images may NOT be taken from the internet.
  • All images must have been taken by you or your family locally.
  • You may include yourself in the image if the sign is still legible.
  • All images that are granted credit will be granted 5 points. Each individual may submit up to 8 images for this project for a total of 40 points possible (the equivalent of 4 missed homework assignments).
  • The images posted/credited are done so on a first-come, first-serve basis based upon the arrival of your email.
NOTE:  Images taken from restaurant menus or schools will not be accepted for credit.
Only electronic/digital images can be accepted due to the nature of this project.

The exams have begun.  :)

Hopefully the review sessions were helpful for you.  Did you take good notes?  Did the patterns make sense to you?  Do you know where the emphasis lies?  I bet you do!

Final exams are as follows:

Wednesday:  3rd and 4th (even though we have a late start)

Thursday:  5th and 6th

Friday:  1st and 2nd

Grades WILL NOT BE FINALIZED until the END of NEXT WEEK.

¡Buena suerte, chavales!
-Sra. Chan

Here's the latest news I have about Finals at OHS (and CHS as they are now on a semester schedule too).

Here are the scenarios and the plans to go with them:

1)  Finals will remain on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday with the cancellation of school on Monday.

2)  If we are two hours late on Tuesday, finals will still remain on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

3)  If school is canceled on Tuesday,  finals will be moved forward one day, thus finals will be on Thursday, Friday, and Monday.

4)  If the unexpected happened and we had school cancellation on Wednesday, finals will be moved forward two days and be held on Friday, Monday, and Tuesday.

There will be early release all three days.  With early release on the first two days of finals (currently Wednesday and Thursday) bus pick-up will be between 12:30 and 12:45.  The last day of finals (currently Friday) bus pick-up will be between 12:15 and 12:20.

Can you believe it's time for school again?
Oh!  I can!  It's SPANISH time!  Wahoo!
What's your first assignment for class?
Why are you online to do it?

Throughout the school year, we will explore the use of a blog format for some course writing as well as access other authentic (read:  real!) resources available online (music, videos, chat, etc) to learn Spanish about about the different cultures.

Here's your first assignment

1.    Complete this online survey.  Be sure to use your real name on the survey and include your period number.

2.    Sign up for the forums (See the link titled "The Paw Print Forums) using your Spanish first name and last initial or period number.

3.    Download and print your copy of the course syllabus from the Spanish 2 Homepage and have your parents sign it.

4.    Find two items that interest you on this website and write it on your syllabus under my email addresses.

5.  Register for a FREE Quizlet account and sign up for our study group.  (Group Name:  OlyBearSpanish  Password: pickles)

Piece of cake, huh?  Or should I say "super fácil"!

" Come on - you know the lyrics, right?

Last two chances to get some help:
Monday after school 2:45 - 3:45 Spanish II
Tuesday after school 2:45 - 3:30 Spanish I

Just keep in mind that tutoring can only help if you've done your part too. Come to the tutoring sessions with ideas about what -specifically- you'd like to cover or review.

Buena suerte con los exámenes, chicos.
No se preocupan mucho - pero deben estudiar.

…about your final project? Is your group not meeting? Is the project not coming together the way you planned or would like?  Then PLEASE come see me!

It's not too late to see me!  Get help!  Find a new approach!  Propose and new end-result!  Please!

In addition - Lab THREE will be open after school this week on the following days:

  • Monday (w/ Ms. Tuzzolino)
  • Tuesday (w/ Ms. Chan)  (until 4PM)
  • Wednesday (w/ Ms. Tuzzolino)
  • Thursday (w/ Ms. Chan) (until 3:20 - sorry I have a doctor appointment)
  • Friday (w/ Ms. Tuzzolino)

World Knowledge

Having a back problem certainly makes me slow down sometimes.  More than anything, it has given me a little bit of time to ponder things.

I found this slide show online today that shows "What the World Eats" in a week.  Basically, Time Magazine asked families to keep track of the food (and the expenses) for one week.  Then they took a picture of that family with ALL of the food that they would eat/consume in one week.  The resulting photographs certainly teach a lot.  I couldn't resist sharing them with you.

Check it out.
